What Is a .WMV File?
Windows Media Video
Windows Media Video (.wmv)
Overview
WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's compressed video format, introduced in 1999 as part of the Windows Media framework. A .wmv file is an ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container holding video compressed with one of the Windows Media Video codecs and, usually, Windows Media Audio.
The format was designed for streaming over the dial-up and early broadband connections of its time, and for Microsoft's digital rights management. Both goals shaped it: WMV files are small and stream well, and some of them are locked to the machine or account that bought them.
Technical Specifications

- Container: ASF (Advanced Systems Format)
- Codecs: WMV 7, 8, 9 (VC-1), WMV Screen, WMV Image; audio typically WMA
- Introduced: 1999

The 16 bytes are the GUID of the ASF Header Object, identical for .wmv, .wma and .asf. Telling video from audio-only requires reading the stream properties objects inside the header.
File Structure
ASF file
├── Header Object (GUID 75B22630-668E-11CF-A6D9-00AA0062CE6C)
│ ├── File Properties duration, bitrate, packet size
│ ├── Stream Properties one per stream: WMV3 video, WMA audio
│ ├── Content Description title, author, copyright
│ └── Extended Content DRM and other metadata
├── Data Object fixed-size packets of interleaved media
└── Index Objects for seeking
The fixed packet size is what makes ASF stream cleanly: a server can start sending from any packet boundary.
WMV 9 and VC-1
WMV 9 was standardised by SMPTE in 2006 as VC-1, which made it one of the three mandatory codecs for Blu-ray and HD DVD alongside MPEG-2 and H.264. That is the format's lasting technical contribution: a Blu-ray disc may well contain VC-1 video even though the WMV file format itself is now rare.
History and Development
Windows Media Video 7 arrived in 1999 and competed with RealVideo and QuickTime for streaming. WMV 9 (2003) was competitive with early H.264 and powered Microsoft's media ecosystem: Windows Media Player, Zune, Xbox 360 and the DRM-protected stores that sold movies in the mid-2000s.
Microsoft shifted to MP4 and H.264 with Windows 8 and Silverlight's retirement. Windows Media Player still plays WMV, but no current Microsoft product writes it by default, and Movies & TV, Clipchamp and Xbox all favour MP4.
Common Use Cases
- Archived Windows-era video: screen recordings, corporate training, PowerPoint exports before 2013
- Old Windows Movie Maker projects, which exported WMV
- Legacy streaming content from Windows Media Services
- DRM-protected purchases from discontinued stores, many of which can no longer be unlocked
How to Open a WMV File
Windows
- Windows Media Player (the legacy one, still in Windows 11) opens WMV natively; so does the newer Media Player app.
- VLC and MPC-HC play it without any codec installation.
macOS
- QuickTime does not open WMV. Apple dropped the Flip4Mac plugin route years ago.
- VLC and IINA play WMV directly. Elmedia Player is another option.
Linux
- VLC, mpv, and GStreamer players with
gst-libavinstalled.
iPhone, iPad and Android
- No built-in support. VLC (free) plays WMV on both; otherwise convert to MP4.
DRM-protected files
A WMV that plays in VLC but shows only audio, or that Windows Media Player says needs a licence, is DRM-protected. The licence servers for most 2000s stores are gone. If the file is yours, screen recording during playback on a Windows machine that still holds the licence is the only remaining route.
How to Convert a WMV File
# To MP4 with H.264 and AAC, the universal choice
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
# Keep the VC-1 video, just change the container (MKV accepts VC-1; MP4 generally does not)
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -c copy output.mkv
# Extract the audio
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 audio.mp3
Graphical: HandBrake opens WMV and exports MP4 or MKV; VLC's Convert / Save does the same with less control. On Windows, Clipchamp imports WMV and exports MP4.
Conversion out of WMV is always a re-encode of a lossy source, so a slight quality loss is unavoidable. Use a low CRF (18 to 20) to keep it invisible.
Advantages
- Efficient for its era: WMV 9 compressed well at low bitrates.
- Streams reliably thanks to fixed-size packets.
- Native on Windows, including old versions.
Limitations
- Microsoft-centric: no native support on Apple or mobile platforms.
- DRM: protected files may be permanently unplayable.
- Obsolete toolchain: nothing modern writes WMV by default.
- Lower quality per byte than H.264, HEVC or AV1.

How to identify .WMV files from the bytes
Windows Media Video files carry a fixed byte pattern, the file signature or magic number, that identifies them regardless of the extension. This is what our detector reads.
| Offset | Hex | ASCII |

Check a file yourself: xxd -l 16 file.wmv on macOS and Linux, or Format-Hex file.wmv | Select-Object -First 1 in PowerShell.Full WMV signature reference
